Buck had taken down all but two of the targets near Sanchez’s home building. He wasn’t seeing any more trying to escape through the doorways of the quonset I was still on the other side of. The two enemy who were bunkered in front of the most forward bastion had taken well covered separate firing positions. They were working together in their attempt at locating him within their firing sectors by pinging shots into his direction. They were trying to get him to show himself or return their fire.

I was stepping out alongside the length of burning building which had earlier been a barracks for an insidious brand of soldiers. I was keeping my weapon raised to allow me to keep visual aim down the barrel as I moved across the terrain. I could hear Buck returning fire from time to time. I believed he knew that I was moving toward the two he couldn’t get a good sight picture on. His fire was just keeping them distracted while buying me time.

I worked my way along the metal structure to the same corner that the two who had me pinned down were firing from. I stood by the corner and peeked around. The two who were trying to zero in on where Buck might fire from next were hunkered down on my side of one of two parked jeeps. I had them in my sites and decided not to wait. Instead, while they’re firing at Buck, I flipped my selector switch to auto and stepped out from cover. I released a short burst of three to five rounds into the one who was firing in that moment. He slumped forward and slid off the jeep’s hood onto the ground. Then I shifted my body and turned my sight picture upon the other who was turning himself and his weapon around to face me. I squeezed out another three to five round burst into his chest and torso. He fell backward onto the berm the jeep was pulled up to park against. From there he pushed himself up onto his knees. After a momentary pause he fell over onto his side and died.

Then I spoke my intentions.

“Going in to secure the barracks.”

The moment I finished my words and had re-stepped back around the corner I had come from, more automatic weapons fire erupted from downrange, from the house. I paused to peek around and hopefully see from where, exactly, this new volley of suppressive firepower was coming from. I spied two targets. Each had taken position in separate windows at different ends of the house’s front. I ducked back around as two rounds pinged the metal I had just retreated behind.

“Roger that Pride. Bring up the rear when all is secure. I’m going in.”

I knew I wasn’t empty. But, still, I ejected my ammo clip from the magazine well, flipped the magazine over, visually checked that no dirt or debris had lodged in the open end of that second clip during my movements, and glided the unused full banana clip into my weapon’s well.
